As per the NEP
(National Education Policy), the Delhi Directorate of Education (DoE) is going
to implement a compulsory subject to be chosen by the students of 9th
and 10th grade from the academic year 2023–24.
There are a lot of
subjects on this option, like information technology, beauty and wellness, data
science, food technology, financial markets, sales and marketing, physical
activity trainers, etc. The school can choose the subjects according to their
infrastructure and manpower.
DOE states that NEP
aims to overcome the social status hierarchy. Vocational education programmes
are to be integrated into main-stream education in phases. Early vocational
education in the middle and secondary grades will aid in its smooth integration
into higher education. Every child should learn at least one vocational
subject. It will emphazise the dignity of labour. To advance this philosophy,
the Department of Education will make vocational training a required subject
for all students in grades IX and X. Though DoE is already offering skill
subjects in some schools, from the academic year 2023–24 onward, skill subjects
will be offered in all Delhi Government Schools. All school principals have
been directed to take up the matter with CBSE at the earliest for those who are
going to appear in the 10th board exam in 2024. A well-skilled
workforce is a key requirement for the prosperity and growth of a nation.
